Here are some important facts to know ahead of time:
- Catholic weddings need to be held on consecrated grounds (a church or chapel) and so can’t be held on the beach or on a cruise. If you are really keen for a sea view, we can happily help you find a reception venue with one!
- Catholic churches in different countries may have different rules for hosting a wedding. We help you to get clear exactly what they require so that you don’t miss anything out.
- It is a good plan to get the paperwork process in flow a year in advance. Bear in mind that most home parishes need at least 6 months. Then, add a bit of extra time on top for the paperwork to go back and forth with your desired destination church.
- It all begins with your home parish where you worship. The person you should approach is usually your parish priest. Haven’t been to Mass in a while? Just find your nearest church, explain your situation and ask to meet with the priest.
- Previously married? An annulment may be possible (declaring the previous marriage invalid). It is essential to speak to your parish priest (especially before setting a date).
- Once the parish priest completes all the paperwork, the local chancery (diocesan office) must give approval for the wedding to take place in another location.
- Your destination church will also have to give approval. To avoid disappointment, it is best to contact them sooner rather than later, particularly if you want to get married in a popular place.
- Local vs. travelling priests: we can help find a priest in the destination country or you can bring a priest from home.
- You will ultimately be responsible for completing this paperwork in the right time, but we will be happy to help support and guide you along the way to make it as smooth as possible.
